@Xi Computer Corp.
Xi MTower SP
In our article, "7
Hot-Rod Cad Systems" (CADENCE, September 1997, pp. 30-40), we
included some of the best names in the business, such as Digital, IBM, and
Intergraph; we were surprised to see Xi
emerge victorious. Maybe we shouldn't have been. We put
ourselves in the shoes of CAD managers (those with limited budgets) who
needed to satisfy their high-end CAD users and set about trying to find the
best value. We weren't just after raw performance, although that was
certainly important. Or just the most features. Nor were we just interested
in low cost. We combined all three major
aspects of computer buying - performance, cost, and features and then let
the numbers crown the winner. This years recommended
workstation, with the best combination of
performance, features and speed is the Xi 266 PII Mtower SP. You
get a Pentium II, 266 MHz system, with 64 MB of RAM, 4.5GB hard drive,
17-inch monitor and 24x CD ROM for $5,599.
Other companies and
products which won annual editors choice awards this year are: Intel Corp.'s
Pentium II processor, Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT 4.0, Hewlett-Packard Co.
HP DesignJet 750C Plus, and Autodesk Inc. AutoCAD release 14.
Computer Corp. was the ONLY computer workstation to receive the prestigious
editors choice award.
